Built along the former route of the Vouga Railway Line, the Vouga Eco-Trail follows the river through natural landscapes of great beauty, linking former railway halting points, railway bridges and viewpoints overlooking the valley. Whether on foot or by bike, it is an accessible route that invites you to explore the region in a peaceful and sustainable way.

Oliveira de Frades

In the heart of the Lafões region, Oliveira de Frades invites you to discover a place where nature and history go hand in hand.

Take a stroll through the historic centre, discover the flavours of the local cuisine and visit the Municipal Museum, a venue that houses important archaeological and ethnographic collections, revealing the way of life, traditions and identity of this municipality over the centuries.

Just a few minutes from the Vale do Éden lies the Antelas Dolmen, which is classified as a National Monument and is considered one of the most important megalithic monuments in Europe. Dating back more than five thousand years, it is notable for the extraordinary paintings preserved inside its burial chamber, which bear witness to the richness of this region’s prehistoric heritage.

With its heritage, culture and natural landscapes, Oliveira de Frades is a destination that invites you to slow down, explore and discover the authenticity of a region shaped by the passage of time.

The Virela River Beach is one of the closest spots to enjoy nature around the Vale do Éden. Right by the water and surrounded by tranquility, it invites you to take a break, go for leisurely walks, and enjoy short getaways during your stay.

It’s the perfect activity for quiet days, when the plan might simply be to go for a walk, breathe in the fresh air, and enjoy the scenery at a leisurely pace.

The calm waters of the Ribeiradio Reservoir create a landscape of rare serenity, where the River Vouga blends with the region’s verdant slopes. It is an ideal place to contemplate nature, photograph the scenery or simply enjoy the tranquillity that characterises this area. The surrounding area also offers excellent viewpoints and walking routes along the water’s edge.

Discovering the Vale do Éden also means setting out to explore the trails that criss-cross the region. Amidst levadas, rivers, waterfalls, oak groves and old country lanes, there are routes for different levels of difficulty, allowing you to experience the natural and cultural riches of Oliveira de Frades at first hand. Highlights include the Rivers and Levadas Route, the Gaia Route, the Cabeços Route and the Vouga Trail, which runs alongside the Ribeiradio Reservoir.
